Certain types of birds can cause damage to our garden, particularly at the time of planting when they go to feed on freshly planted seeds.
Birds can be harmful to crops too directly pecking the vegetables and in particular the fruits, for this reason it may be appropriate to think about how to defend the vegetable garden and orchard from birds, without harming these animals but in order to drive them away.
However, before taking measures against these animals it is good to make a clarification: in reality, several species of birds are useful because they are insectivores.
Hunting birds is not always convenient
The species of birds that feed on insects are almost half of the Italian poultry species. So there are several insectivorous birds that are very useful for our garden, going to feed on larvae and parasites that would otherwise damage the cultivation. An example is the great tit, very common in our country.
In particular when feeding the chicks, most of the birds hunt for larvaeMost species that feed on seeds, berries and fruit also use insects as a brood weaning.
Therefore, in the perspective of an organic garden, you need to learn as much as possible to live with birds, since animal and vegetable biodiversity turns into wealth, introducing predators that limit threats to cultivated plants.
It should be noted that birds are boring for crops only at certain times of the year: when fruits are ripe for their attractiveness and during sowing. Obviously, when the seedlings are transplanted instead of putting the seeds in the open field, the problem of birds during sowing does not arise.
Often rather than chasing away the birds it is better to make friends with them by feeding them and hosting them by building artificial nests dedicated to them.
Unwelcome birds in the garden
Among the most hateful birds for those who cultivate there are magpies is crows, they are omnivorous birds but being particularly voracious they can cause damage both to the seeds and to the fruits.
The goldfinch and the I will pass they are mainly granivorous, therefore they must be removed during the period of direct sowing in the field, while the reversal it is very active in pecking fruit.
Those who garden on the balcony can be joined by the very brazen pigeons, more daring in approaching buildings than other birds.
Blue tit is great tit instead they are large predators of larvae, these species must not be removed from crops because they do an excellent job of natural insecticide.
Keep the birds away from the garden
There are several ways to remove birds from the garden, from scarecrows to noises. Let's find out which are the most useful methods to discourage birds.
Building a scarecrow
The most classic and fascinating bollard is the scarecrow. The concept is to create a visual bollard.
The scarecrow if done well is also aesthetically beautifulThis is why it should not be missing in a vegetable garden, it is a very nice element. In addition, making it can be a creative activity, perhaps to be done with the children. The little ones will have fun building a cute puppet, in reality the human form is not essential to defend themselves from birds.
Visual bird deterrents
The effective features of a visual bird deterrent can be:
- Presence of bright colors or, even better, of reflective material. Bright reflections and colors attract the eye and can make birds flee, for example silver paper, broken pieces of mirror or old cd roms can be used.
- Presence of moving parts. Wires, rags or other elements that rotate with the wind can be useful in simulating the presence of a living being, a possible predator in the bird's eye.
- Anthropomorphic aspect. Some birds have learned to know and fear man, so they flee from sight. This is the least important feature. The puppet scarecrow is an element above all of tradition.
- Aspect of predator. An evocative deterrent for sparrows and small birds is an eagle or other predatory wooden bird hanging from a transparent wire attached to a very high pole that hangs over the garden. It can also have an aesthetic value and is a much loved element by children. For example you find here a beautiful owl and here a hawk quite cheap and cute to see.
One important thing that all of these methods have in common is that they have one limited time duration: do not think that birds are completely stupid: the bollard has an initial surprise effect, but then the birds get used to its presence and understand that it is a harmless element. For this reason it is advisable to move it periodically and arrange it only in the presence of seeds and fruits that can be attractive.
Other bird remedies
In addition to the visual bollard, there are other ways to keep birds away: you can protect yourself with nets or covers, chase them away with noises or ultrasounds.
Barriers. If we want to focus on physical barriers we can protect newly sown plots covering them with non-woven fabric, in the first phase of germination it will not give any problem and places the seeds away from birds. This method is not suitable for the protection of fruits, those who have big bird problems can install protective nets over the crops, however it is a fairly expensive defense both in terms of material and work, which will also make it very uncomfortable to go to work. the covered parts of the garden, for this reason it is rarely worthwhile to realize it.
Noises. Sudden noises can be useful methods to scare and scare birds away, there are devices capable of causing small detonations, but they are solutions that can only be evaluated in professional contexts. In the home garden they would attract the ire of the neighbors. Ultrasound is an expensive and not always effective method, but it does not disturb.
Living with the birds
An alternative option could be to provide alternative food for the birds by creating a feeder with grains to be filled at the time of sowing, if the birds find food comfortably they will have no reason to go and peck at the seedbed.
Personally, I don't always recommend it because sometimes it ends up attracting too many diners.
Finally, I invite you to take into account that some small damage caused by birds in an organic garden can be tolerated. Nature gives us a lot, we can afford to sacrifice a small part of our crop to feed other forms of life.
